Chapter 24

After a long night of tossing and turning, I cracked one eye open and saw light coming through the blinds. Morning was finally here. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d wanted daylight to arrive so badly. I climbed out of bed and hit the shower. Even though I hadn’t caught up on my sleep yet, today was too important, and taking a second look at that video was all I could think about.

After a bowl of oatmeal, two coffees, and a slice of toast, I said goodbye to the family and left. I planned to arrive at the precinct earlier than usual, and as much as I wanted to queue up that video and watch it, I wouldn’t do that until Rue arrived. It wouldn’t be right, and partners always did right by each other.

Instead, I updated Royce on what Devon and I had discovered at Jacob’s van last night. I went through the story with him about how the van was blocked in by other vehicles, so we’d decided to take a closer look. That was when Rue discovered the missing side mirror. That mirror, or lack of one, would tell us whether we were looking at Jacob’s van or not.

After speaking with Royce, I returned to my office. I wanted everything ready to go as soon as Devon walked in. The best-case scenario would be to announce our results at that morning’s briefing, and I couldn’t wait.

Everything was set, and I waited on Rue to walk through the door. Finally, I heard footsteps coming down the hallway, and he crossed over the threshold.

“It’s about time! Damn it, dude, how do you stay so calm and collected?”

Rue chuckled. “I can get all riled up like you, but that won’t affect the outcome. It’s going to be what it’s going to be no matter how jacked up you get.”

He had a point, but I didn’t care. “Get your ass over here, and let’s look at the footage again. I want something worthwhile to tell the group at the briefing.”

Rue grabbed a guest chair and slid it over to my desk. He sat down and nodded. “Let ’er rip.”

Since everything was ready to go, I hit Play, and we watched. Again, headlights brightened up the exit lane as they closed in on the camera. We would see the van in a second or two.

“Here we go.” The white blur barreled past the camera as my finger hovered over Pause. I hit it then had to back it up slowly. “Wait a minute!” I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. I hit Play again and backed it up as if the mirror would disappear, but it didn’t. The van that whizzed past the camera had a perfectly good functioning driver’s-side mirror. Seeing the black mirror trim told me my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me—the vehicle wasn’t Jacob’s. I pounded the desk with my fist. “Are you seeing what I’m seeing?” My question was rhetorical, but Rue answered anyway.

“Yeah, damn it.
